Not necessarily. Although, some parents find it extremely helpful despite the milk supply.
Yes and no. It is Mother Nature at its best, but like anything you haven’t done before, it may require some training. The International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBLCE) certifies lactation consultants who meet its criteria and have passed an exam. Healthy Children Project, Inc. certifies lactation counselors. Both Lactation Consultants and Lactation Counselors support new mothers by solving certain breastfeeding difficulties such as sore nipples and low milk supply. Or by simply coming to ensure the process is going smoothly for both mom and baby.
A study published in the American Journal of Public Health found that patients connected with International Board-Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLC) were three times more likely to be exclusively breastfeeding at three months, more likely to be exclusively breastfeeding at one month and less likely to wean in the first six months. Although babies benefit from any breast milk they receive, there is increasing evidence that exclusive breastfeeding supports a healthy microbiome and imparts important, lifelong health benefits for both mothers and infants including a reduced rate of infections in newborns.
It is a good idea to establish a relationship with a Lactation Consultant or a Lactation Counselor before the baby comes. You may also benefit from a private visit and class to prepare yourself for the upcoming journey. Book your Lactation Consultant or Lactation Counselor visit as soon as you can once the baby in born. The first 3 days, then 10 days, then a month are crucial for successful breastfeeding. If you are not receiving enough support in a hospital (if this is where you chose to give birth), book a Lactation Consultant or a Lactation Counselor to come to the hospital. Otherwise, the first week at home is ideal regardless if the breastfeeding is going well or not. You will always benefit and feel more confident after meeting with a professional.
