Melissa honors her passion of helping expectant mothers through their birth experience by emphasizing a mindful, holistic, and integrative approach to pregnancy. As a mother of a two-year-old little boy, she brings a sense of empathy and reverence to every birth she supports along with the evidence-based resources that help mothers carve out the type of birth experience they desire. Melissa is grounded in an approach to her work that never dictates what a mother should do with her birth experience but empowers her with information that will align with her own intuition, building confidence that carries over into her journey through motherhood. Melissa came into this work after her own transformative experience into motherhood with the support of two Doulas. Their unfaltering support, education, and confidence in a mother’s intuition was contagious and awoke a passion to serve other women in a way she had not considered before. Knowing that she can show up with the same open mind and heart that she received in such a crucial moment, is the reason she is on this path.

As a first time mom, I was nervous about my labor experience and Melissa completely changed my birthing experience for the better. She has an incredibly positive presence which allowed me to advocate for myself in the delivery room and I truly believe if she had not been there, I would have ended up with a more stressful delivery and multiple interventions. My water broke very early however I was not having contractions. The MD wanted to start me on pitocin which I did not want since it would make my contractions stronger and force me into an epidural earlier. Melissa helped me move around to start bringing in the contractions, use an exercise ball and rebozo, used essential oils and played soothing music to calm me- all which made the space feel more like a spa than a hospital room! Once the contractions started, she gave me wonderful massages and compresses which were very soothing. I would HIGHLY recommend Melissa to my friends and family who want a thoughtful, smart, caring woman by their side before, during and after their birth. I am so thankful for her support, she is truly a blessing. When we have our second child I look forward to having Melissa by my side again :)

Melissa was excellent throughout my labor and delivery. In the weeks leading up to the big day, we met in person to create a birth plan, answer any questions my husband and I had, and to practice various techniques to help reduce the pain during contractions. The hospital can be a very daunting and unwelcoming place. My nurse was actually a bit of a nightmare but thanks to Melissa, I was able to stay focus, remain calm, follow my birth plan and most importantly deliver a healthy baby. It would have been a very different experience without her warmth and care. She helped me advocate for myself which I found to be very empowering. I first heard of Melissa and Mindful Birth & Wellness when I began my research online. A veteran doula who I initially wanted to work with referred Melissa to me after she was unavailable and I am so thankful!"

Since I had originally planned a home birth and risked out due to hypertension, I was worried that I would not be able to have the natural birth that I desired. I also worried that I would not be able to cope with the pain, and would end up relying on pain medication. Having Melissa on my team made me feel more secure in my plan to have as much of a natural birth experience as possible in the hospital setting. Knowing that she was there to advocate for me and my husband, as well as our baby, did a lot to ease my anxiety about the birthing process. If a friend was considering a doula, I would tell her that it would definitely be worthwhile to hire someone, even if she thinks she doesn't need one! One of the qualities that I think makes Melissa a great doula is her positivity in general, and specifically her positive attitude about birth. She has a great energy and that goes a long way in making an expectant or new mother feel good! It was very reassuring to have a woman who was also a mother there specifically to support me, and to make sure that my wishes regarding the birth of my child were respected. I also really enjoyed our postpartum visit, as I had many questions that Melissa was able to answer, and because she was able to provide me with a lot of additional information that I found very useful. Melissa, I can't thank you enough!

Your Doula is your primary source for emotional, physical and educational support during pregnancy and throughout the entire birthing process. Your Doula is there to help your birth be safe, empowering and a memory that you will cherish for life. Doulas are available for phone consultations throughout the pregnancy and will schedule visits with you in person leading up to delivery. After 36 weeks of gestation, your Doula will be on call 24hrs a day, and will be fully and constantly present during labor. Your Doula acts as an advocate and is there to support your choices regarding your pregnancy and birth; they do not impose their own agenda.
A Doula will support and empower your choices for your pregnancy, whether it is a natural birth, medicated, or cesarean; be it a home birth, at a birthing center, or in a hospital. The Cochrane Review recently published a study stating: “... Supportive care during labour may enhance physiological labour processes, as well as women's feelings of control and confidence in their own strength and ability to give birth. This may reduce the need for obstetric intervention and also improve women's experiences”.
A Doula is there to support your decisions. Think of it as the co-pilot on this journey, minus the decision making privilege. Only YOU and your partner are legally responsible for any decisions made during pregnancy, birth and afterwards. To put it simply: NO.
Anytime. This is a personal decision you will make when you feel you need support outside from your family and friends, an unbiased voice, a friendly expert, an active witness of this beautiful stage of your life.
Yes. Doulas are supportive of whatever decisions parents make during pregnancy, birth and/or afterwards. A Doula should never encourage nor discourage a mother to choose between having a medicated or unmedicated birthing process. They will be able to review the pros and cons of your decision if you feel so inclined to share it with them.
Yes. Again, a Doula is an extra pair of hands, ears, a voice that can help you express your wishes at a very vulnerable time. A Doula will never make a decision for you, but can certainly help you feel supported about the ones you make. That includes a C-section.
